This week I had the chance to revisit a place that a lot of us used to frequent years ago. Does anyone remember Western Trails Ranch out near Wittmann, AZ? This place hadn’t entered my mind in years as a destination, but I got a call from the new co-owner, George Valverde to come out and take a look at what they were doing with the ranch. I was amazed by the transformation of the place. It is now owned by the Dillon’s Restaurant company, and Western Trails Ranch is making a big comeback. Dillon’s is a popular restaurant name here in the West Valley with 3 other locations including Lake Pleasant and the Wildlife World Zoo. They are now brining their great food and entertainment to Dillon’s at Western Trails Ranch.
Western Trails Ranch is an 11.2 acre property that features the Buzzard Saloon Biker Haven bar, the R&G BBQ Ranch, Live Music on The Grand Ave. Opre Main Stage, Buzzards Stage and Bull Riding and Roping Thursday – Sunday. There is plenty to do and see here as you can roam the 11 acre ranch with your favorite beverage while listening to music, petting “Thunder” the ZEBU from South Asia, having a great Dillon’s dinner, watching roping or just enjoying the day under with friends under one of the shade structures while listening to live music. I was really impressed with the clean up and improvements that they are continually making here to make this a truly unique destination for the Valley area.
I started my visit as I rode under the Western Trails Ranch welcome sign off of U.S. 60 and parked on the new concrete next to the Buzzard Saloon. The concrete was a welcome sight from days gone by that made parking very nice. This could easily accommodate 30-40 motorcycles. One of the improvements that I noticed right away was the upgrade of the shade structure next to the Saloon featuring Veteran Parking Only right up front. Since I was there they have built a bull riding ring right next to the Saloon making it a great place to watch bull riding while having dinner or a drink. Just to the side of Buzzard Saloon there is a covered structure with a pool table and a band stage next to it with picnic tables out front.
As I made my way toward the R&G BBQ I passed the Wash House and the new bar that they have installed for when it gets busy. I was really impressed with the way that George has cleaned up and decorated the restaurant including adding 10 new TV’s around the room so that you can watch your favorite sport while dining. It is a very comfortable, relaxed and friendly atmosphere that featured a bar, tables and high top seating. I had the opportunity to eat lunch while I was there and it was excellent! The good Dillon’s quality of food and service that you would expect. One of the things that they are going to start doing in addition to the restaurant is putting outdoor an outdoor grill next to the Saloon that will be serving fresh grilled burgers and pulled pork sandwiches that you can get quickly and eat outside. Breakfast is also served from 9am – 10:45am Thursday-Sunday. This would make a nice breakfast ride on your way up North as well.
After we had lunch our tour continued to the roping ring where you can see the cattle that they use for roping and even pet some of them on display. This sport has grown to where they have as many as 500 ropers and riders on a weekend. Something extra for you to see and watch while enjoying your visit to Western Trails Ranch. And it is free to watch!
Dillon’s at Western Trails Ranch is now ramping up their live bands and entertainment which will feature live music on the Buzzards Stage next to the Saloon from 1-5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays and live music on the Main Opre Stage from 5-9PM. Mojo Rats is scheduled to play this Saturday night, February 22nd from 5-9PM. Watch the Western Trails Website under the tab Band Schedule for upcoming live music.
Overall, I was very impressed with what George and Dillon’s has done with this place. Everything seems to be fresh and vibrant with a definite focus on great food and entertainment. Not only is it a great biker destination, but also a great cowboy and family destination with all of the other things that there are to see and do here. This has been off of my radar for quite a while, but is now back on for a good food and entertainment destination. I would highly recommend giving it another shot to see the new and improved Ranch. Stay tuned to the newsletter for upcoming activities and band schedules.
